The name reflects our purpose: bringing people together at an intersection of compassion and shared values, regardless of race, sex, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or religion.
This commitment naturally carries into how we live each day. So, what does it mean to live a vegan lifestyle?
At its heart, it’s a life of compassion.
Veganism is the practice of avoiding animal products and animal-derived foods, known as by-products. It’s also a philosophy that
rejects the treatment of animals as commodities. In practice, this means avoiding all animal products and by-products, including those tested on animals.
Vegans make every practical effort to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty. This spans food, clothing, personal care, household goods, furnishings, and beyond.
Veganism was originally defined by the organization The Vegan Society. Founded in 1944, it offers this clear definition of veganism:
"Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of humans, animals and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals."
